The Best Tapas Bars in Málaga
I love tapas! In my opinion, Málaga offers some of the best tapas bars in Spain. On a recent trip to Andalucía I inhaled as many tapas as possible. We ate tapas for lunch, dinner, linner, etc. We squeezed into crowded tapas bars the way music lovers press against a concert stage. We gasped with excitement at croquetas the way Swifties squeal at an Eras concert. In this analogy Taylor Swift is Javier, the middle-aged waiter slinging tapas and beer (in case you were wondering). And of all the fabulous tapas bars across Spain, Málaga had some of my favorite tapas bars. Without further ado here are the four best tapas bars in Málaga.
Bar Mercado Atarazanas
The best tapas bar in Málaga for seafood dishes is
Bar Mercado Atarazanas
There’s a wonderful market in Málaga called Mercado Atarazanas. Market vendors sell everything from fresh fish to dried spices to olives. Tucked into a back corner is Bar Mercado Atarazanas, a tiny tapas bar that serves mostly seafood. I recommend you order the mixed fried fish (pescaíto frito) so you can try a bit of everything. Also order the prawns in spicy oil (gambas pil pil) to dip your bread into.
When I visited Bar Mercado Atarazanas was absolutely packed — so close your elbows touch the nearest stranger. Speaking of touching strangers, I felt someone graze one of my butt cheeks so I whipped around only to find a toddler smiling up at me from her baby carriage. It was funny but also yes, you are thaaaat close to your fellow diners. One of the things I learned in Spain is that any tapas bar worth its salt will be crowded. And if you can’t stand to (a) stand (b) wait or (c) press up against strangers, then don’t go! But also please do go because tapas bars have the best food in Spain.
After lunch at the tapas bar you should walk through Mercado Atarazanas and gather food souvenirs to bring home. My friends and I bought briny olives, salty Marcona almonds, and large jammy Málaga raisins. The olive vendor even vacuumed packed our olives for the long plane ride home. Food souvenirs are my favorite souvenirs. Whether you shop or not, Mercado Atarazanas is worth visiting purely for the tapas bar. Bar Mercado Atarazanas is one of the best tapas bars in Málaga if you like seafood.
Mesón Mariano
The best tapas bar for ensaladilla malagueña is
Mesón Mariano
I would return to Mesón Mariano for one dish only: the salad. The ensaladilla malagueña to be exact. This sweet and salty dish has potatoes, oranges, salt cod, and green olives. Although this combination may sound unusual, it works. It’s got salt, fat, acid, sweet. The juicy oranges, savory olives, salty cod, and perfectly cooked potatoes formed a wonderful dish. Wash it all down with a tinto de verano, which is red wine mixed with lemon soda. Just order it. Trust me. Especially if it’s a hot day in Málaga, an icy fizzy tinto de verano really hits the spot.
Although tapas bar Mesón Mariano is known for its artichoke dishes the stewed baby artichokes I ordered tasted dull and tired. Perhaps I got a bad batch? Maybe I should’ve ordered them fried not stewed? Despite this hiccup, I believe the ensaladilla malagueña places Mesón Mariano among the best tapas bars in Málaga.
La Farola de Orellana
The best tapas bar in Málaga for meat dishes is
La Farola de Orellana
Of all the tapas bars we tried in Málaga, La Farola de Orellana offered the best experience. Firstly, this tapas bar had the best food. The most flavorful dishes were meat focused, like the lamb ribs, meatballs, and pork cheeks. Secondly, this tapas bar displays their food on big serving platters. You know exactly what you’re ordering. Since we never saw a menu we just pointed at dishes on the counter. Lastly, La Farola de Orellana was full of Spaniards not foreigners. Does it matter?
Well, as I walked past a touristy tapas bar I overhead someone describe Málaga as “like Great Britain but with sun” because the town is crawling with English tourists. When I visit Spain I would like to eat amongst Spaniards even if I myself am not Spanish. Comprendes? Sí. Of all the tapas bars we tried in Spain I think about La Farola de Orellana most often. In my opinion, it’s truly among the best tapas bars in Málaga.
La Tranca
The best tapas bar in Málaga for croquetas is
La Tranca
I ate dozens of croquetas in Spain and I can confidently say that La Tranca made the best croquetas. Their croquetas de jamón are superior because they are light. That’s key. The smooth creamy interior was light, airy, and encased in a thin crisp golden brown shell. If made improperly croquetas can quickly become gummy and heavy. But if done well, they are simultaneously rich yet delicate. The La Tranca croquetas are excellent. Their croquetas de jamón are so good that I believe La Tranca to be one of the best tapas bars in Málaga. You'll have to try it yourself to find out!
